WARNING: These funds are HARD TO GET. (only 2 % of folks ever reach the end of the legal hoops required to get any money from their abuser. Without the funds to hire a good lawyer, it’s almost impossible.
A legal advocate at a local DV agency will NOT always inform you of how hard this actually is. Ask the agency directly what proof you would need to qualify before you waste your time. Local Legal Advocate’s are also record keepers. Consider any report you make to them to be admissible in court and open to being used against you by your abuser.

what to know before you consider a faith leader or a church for support….
Many folks are blamed by their perpetrators or others for their own abuse—a problem that’s often exacerbated by skewed religious teachings.
At SH, we know many local survivors of domestic and gender based violence who continue to affirm the overall value of their faith. Few, however, say that their faith body has helped them end the abuse or help them reach safety. Many folks have told us that responses from their faith network have interfered with their healing process.
Statements like the following, offered as advice, can echo the perpetrator’s justifications for harming us:
“Submit to your husband/boyfriend/partner/man—he is the head of you, as Christ is the head of the church”;
“The wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does”;
“God will never give more than you can handle”;
“Divorce is a sin.”
These types of belief statements can be very dangerous for a survivor.
Our forthcoming “Local Church Survey Report” is in progress to better understand our local religious safety environment. We will publish our public list of local churches that participate. Est. Publish Date: August 2025.
